SUBMERGED: 8 Depths

These are not paintings of the sea; they are paintings of how it feels to be held by it—visceral, moody, and profoundly deep. The lack of detail is intentional. The heavy physical application of paint mirrors the crushing weight of water. Bold dark strokes represent the way the ocean swallows light, just as intense emotion can swallow everything else. These works are my attempt to map the ‘depths’ of feeling—where the line between the sea and self disappears. I did not want to paint what I saw; I had to paint the gravity of being there—into a depth I finally inhabit.
