Elizabeth Anna Nolen: A Native Texan’s Journey Through Drawing, Assemblage, and Poetry
My work is a search for the beyond, an artistic pursuit dedicated to moving from that which does not exist to the possibility of what may arise. Rooted in the spiritual, I enter my creative process through the portal of the spirit within. My expression is a direct response and stands in opposition to prevailing rules and practices.
As a sensual multidisciplinary artist, I acknowledge and expose through drawing, assemblage, and poetry, the profound layered interconnected contradictions of humanity; the pull between right and wrong, indifferent and attentive, and ever-present longing for the spiritual. My work does not reconcile these tensions. It does not accept their separateness. It dares to embrace the total experience of being human.
Through the spontaneous intuitive process of automatism, my abstract drawings become a physical record of my unconscious thoughts and feelings. It is a call and response to a universe within that frees me to see, with a renewed perspective, the world and myself. Working on paper, wood, or canvas with mixed media and a dynamic range of implements, expressive strokes, drips, and marks reveal a raw immediate record of my physical, and emotional energy. Visible seams and uneven surfaces are evidence of my imperfection and transformative process. In their state of becoming, implied figures suggest my humanity, evoking a whole, tied to some ‘thing’ larger.
I design and assemble sustainable objects or repurposed materials into three-dimensional sculptures, where emphasis through contrast and juxtaposition depict bonds between human beings.
My poetry has been anthologized, most recently in easing the edges: a collection of everyday miracles, Friends of the Boerne Public Library, 2021.
Drawing from life and memory, I invite the viewer to consider the unnamed beyond words. I seek to arouse the obscure, to arouse love: the force that unites us all. Through my work, I hope to invite and encourage others to explore their own creative lives and to honor the essence of being human.
